On August 18, 2004, around 0840 hours, the Georgetown Fire Company was dispatched to reported wires down in the area of Route 9 & Asbury Church Rd. Prior to the accident the Emergency Operations Center had a power surge along many others in the Georgetown area. 77-0 responded under the command of Brooks Layton. While en route, an updated report was given of a property damage accident with a telephone pole and wires down. In addition, traffic signals were non-functional at 4 major intersections. A request was made for a priority response from the Power Company and more fire police. 77-0 arrived shortly after confirmed the reports given. Rescue 77 also responded with Assistant Chief Penuel Barrett (77-17) who later took over command of the incident. Due to traffic problems at the scene along with the major intersections, a request was made for more fire police. Route 9 was shut down for approximately 4 hours while Conectiv restored the power. A transmission line was affected by the accident which the Emergency Operations Center to generator power for the time period.
